The sagging of the neck is one of the most common signs of aging, and usually occurs when we reach our 50s. This effect is also referred to as jowling, or more popularly, ‘turkey neck.’
The muscles in this area, known as the platysma muscles, tend to droop and sag forward as gravity takes its toll and the neck begins to form somewhat of a double chin. It can also look as though there is a gradual accumulation of fat developing underneath.
The good news, however, is that a neck lift can successfully fix the effects of turkey neck. Although many patients believe a neck lift and facelift are separate, cosmetic surgeons often improve the neck area by correcting the jowl and mouth area as well.
When undergoing a neck lift, the doctor will perform any of the following depending on the patient’s needs:
During surgery, the doctor will make an incision within the hairline or behind the ears to camouflage any potential scars. The surgeon will then re-define the jaw area and alter the angle of the neckline. At this time, a small incision will also be made under the chin. This is to trim unflattering parts of the neck and lift it into place.
Excess skin will either be removed or tucked away from view — successfully tightening up all that unwanted sagginess. As mentioned earlier, a neck lift and facelift will generally be performed together. The total surgery time could range from about 2-4 hours under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia.
Regardless of which anesthetic option is used, patients are not typically required to stay at the clinic overnight for this type of cosmetic surgery.
It is important to note that you must be in relatively good health to undergo this type of procedure. Explain to your doctor the desired results, but remain realistic about your goals throughout the entire process. Always consult a cosmetic surgeon with extensive experience in this field, and don’t be shy to ask any questions you may have on the procedure or the potential outcome!
